Bicycle Patrol Program

Cottage Grove Police Departments Bicycle Patrol Program was established in 1994. It’s members are specially trained in bicycle patrol tactics and safety techniques. Officers who participate in this program attend an 8-hour bicycle course for certification offered by the Roseburg Police Department and accredited by Department of Public Safety Standards and Training. Officers are taught bicycle safety, maintenance, riding techniques, suspect approach techniques, tactical dismounts, and obstacle negotiations.

The Bicycle Patrol Program allows officers the opportunity to patrol the community without using the standard patrol vehicle. The focus of the patrol is to strengthen Police relations with both businesses and residents of the City. The officers have been used for special events and are there to heighten the awareness of bicycle safety to the children in the community.

The program first two bicycles were donated to the program from an area business. The unit's mountain bikes currently consist of a 21 speed Scorpio, 21 speed KHS Montana, and a 21 speed ZAP Electric bicycle with a Trek Frame. The Scorpio and KHS were donated from R & R Travel in Cottage Grove. The ZAP Electric bicycle was donated from Pacific Power and Light in July of 1997. It has a maximum speed of 20 mph.

Every spring, Cottage Grove Police Department in cooperation with local merchants and South Lane School District, put on a Bicycle Rodeo. The rodeo teaches children bicycle safety. Local merchants volunteer their mechanical expertise and conduct a safety check of every child's bicycle. The Cottage Grove Police Department issues every child's bicycle a City License. The license information is kept on file at the Police Department in case the bicycle is ever stolen.
